Case 7, 8
To the right top of case 7 we find the three boards that show the paelo-geographic reconstruction of the three sedimentation phases. Referring to the finds, they are both fresh-water shells and vegetation remains which come from the “Bucine Sands” and, therefore, date back to the mid-Pleistocene. This is a very interesting collection for a similarly ostensive one is present neither in the Paleontological and Geological Museum of Florence University nor in the Montevarchi Paelonthological Museum of Valdarno “Poggio” Academy. The colour of these fossils deserves special attention: it has a shade that is comparable to rust and, thus, it must have taken this particular colour for the sedimentation environment. This was probably subaquatic and oxidating. In case 8 there are some minerals which were found near Bucine: to the bottom, on the left side of the case, we can observe some limonite nodules (iron hydroxide – FeO(OH)); on the right side, instead, we can see some geodes of kutnahorite (calcium and magnesium carbonate – CaMn(CO3)2).
