Case 2
It is certainly the most spectacular case in the Museum: there is a display of a mandible fragment, a molar and a femur of a Paleoloxodom (Elephas) antiquus (elephant) in addition to a skull and horn of Bison priscus (bison). ‑ As far as the proboscidian mammal is concerned, we must affirm that it is the biggest continental mammal, typical of interglacial periods, found in the “Bucine Sands”.
Between the 2nd and the 3rd case there is a geographical map entitled “Valdarno lakes”, revealed by Doctor Luciano Lazzeri in 1962-63. The map is easily legible: grey (aS and bnS sign) and brown (pf, fs, al, bn/sp, mg, mPl, c’) represent the rocks of pre-lake origin, while light yellow (Pla, 1) and dark one (Pls, Plt), diplaced in the middle and left part of the map, symbolize the deposits of the first lake phase (Castelnuovo Lake). Additionally, light blue colour (three shades – Vag, Vs, Vcg) represents the rocks deposed during the secound lake phase (Montevarchi Lake) and, finally, the so-called “Bucine Sands” (sB) are represented with green colour.
