Case 3, 4, 5
With the exception of the rocks where worm tracked lanes (Strongrock formation – the Cretaceous period – found in Riscaggio in Reggello territory), there are numerous Pliocene marine fossils that come from Castelnuovo Berardenga area (Province of Siena). The majority of them is composed by shallow water seashells. The longitudinally sectioned seashells are very interesting for it is possible to observe through their structure the progressive development of inner chambers. As a matter of fact, we deduce that only the last part of shells is occupied by the shellfish. A circular flower is visible in other types of seashells: it is a hole created by a predator shellfish to eat the inhabitant of the shell.
Echinoids (better known as sea urchins), shark teeth (case 5) and fish vertebrae constitute other very interesting fossils.
Furthermore, in case 5, two boards enables visitors to confront the Pliocene period conditions with present ones. MORE>>
